Dictation you buy once, not rent.
Most dictation apps now charge every month. These are the ones you can pay for once — what they cost, which of them run on Windows, and what to check before you hand over the money.
The short answer
If you are on a Mac, several apps let you buy once — MacWhisper and Superwhisper among them. If you are on Windows, the maintained choices are BeltoVox at $59 or Dragon Professional at $699; everything else modern is a monthly subscription. The reason so few exist is simple: transcription costs the vendor money every time you speak, so a one-time price only works when the app runs on your own API key.
What you can actually buy once
| Tool | Price | Platform | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| BeltoVox | $59 one-time | Windows | Lifetime license, runs on your own API key |
| MacWhisper | One-time | Mac | Buy once — no Windows version |
| Superwhisper | One-time | Mac, iPhone | Buy once — no Windows version |
| Dragon Professional | $699 one-time | Windows | Buy once, but parked since Nuance was acquired |
| Wispr Flow | From about $12 / month | Mac, Windows, iOS | Subscription — stops working when you stop paying |
| Windows Voice Access (Win+H) | Free | Windows | Built in — no rewriting, no translation |

What to check before you pay
A lifetime licence is only a bargain if the thing is still there in a year, and if it does the job you actually bought it for.
- Does it run on your platform? Most cheap lifetime dictation apps are Mac-only.
- Is transcription included, or on your own API key? Both are fine — but one of them is why the price is low.
- Does it type into any application, or only into its own window? Copy-paste dictation gets abandoned within a week.
- Does it do anything beyond transcribing — grammar, rewriting, translation — or is that what the subscription was for?
- Is it still being developed? A one-time purchase of an abandoned product is not a saving.
Where BeltoVox fits
BeltoVox is the Windows entry on that list: $59 once, a lifetime licence, all future updates, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It types straight into whatever app you are in, cleans up or rewrites what you said, translates if you ask it to, and handles 51 dictation languages. It runs on your own Groq or OpenAI key, so there is no monthly fee — and, to be equally clear, no offline mode.
